The “classic” HW1 version plays much better in general but looks even uglier for me than it once did because Gearbox didn’t even bother to update the supported resolution list for monitors created in the last 15 years.
This is all because HW1R is not an engine upgrade of HW1 but an (incomplete) attempt to port HW1’s gameplay to a slightly upgraded HW2 engine. Salvaging is flaky, you can’t retire salvaged ships on the same mission you capture them, and your ships will fire on ships in the process of being drug back to the mothership. Game companies have no business doing that.Īlmost every review of the collection dropped the ball on reporting how buggy and broken the remaster of Homeworld 1 is in the core gameplay/AI.Įvasive maneuvers are gone, and formations are completely broken, having zero effect when ships are in motion. I don't like having to ever sign up for a second account over steam, because steam already is my account. The art style is not the same, or close enough for me to actually enjoy as a refresh. That's a complete abomination / miner wars ripoff. Oh, also that new Descent kickstarter game. One of the reasons why I only liked the original Carmageddon, btw. It's one thing to "update" a game, but it's another when you change the style. Games like Morrowind I recall being particularly bad, as texture colors and alignment were frequently mismatched. They liberally updated them, which means that while the graphics are better, they don't actually match the original, and it completely throws off the nostalgia factor.
There are graphics mods for HW classic, btw:Īlso, Homeworld remastered suffers from SHTUP / Blue Shift / Morrowind texture mod syndrome. The gui does seem more functional, but it didn't need to look that bad either. I'm mainly uncomfortable with the story's art style changes, and the GUI's looks. I haven't played the remastered edition enough to comment on any glaring bugs, so I'll give it the benefit of a doubt, and the ship graphics look decent enough.
I can understand it not being noticeable to other people, but style changes really bother me. Needless to say, it was different enough for me to not like the style changes. There was a direct comparison video of the original to the remastered version. The ships seem tolerable, but there is new audio, and I saw they changed some things from the original. The cinematics were changed, and so was the gui. The competitive multiplayer modes for both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 have been combined into one centralized mode that will allow you access to content (races, maps and game modes) and improvements, features and technology from both games, allowing you to play unlimited competitive multiplayer space battles on an epic scale. It’s not the quality, it’s the style.
